What is Espresso Coffee?

Heard of the term "Espresso Coffee" and never really understood what it means? Well now you can!

Simply put, espresso coffee is coffee made using an espresso machine. Such as the bean-to-cup style or traditional espresso machines in shops such as Costa. The machine or barista will produce a range of drinks with the base of an espresso shot, such as your Latte, Cappuccino or Flat White (and many more).

So "espresso coffee" or "espresso beans" are roasted and selected to be used for espresso and espresso based drinks. They will usually be darker roasted, to power through milky coffees and sometimes a little robusta beans added for crema on an espresso shot.

The alternative would be buy coffee roasted for ground methods of brewing, such as the Cafetière or Moka Pot. This would usually be slightly lighter roasted as the coffee has more contact time with the hot water. Of course coffee can be used interchangeably, it's not a problem if you use espresso beans, ground for your cafetière, it's really personal preference.

Happy Brewing!
