The appeal of instant coffee

The appeal of instant coffee

Hear us out, instant coffee is now the new go to.

We know for many coffee experts the thought of instant coffee is almost an insult to their taste buds. They immediately think of the tasteless, dark liquid known from coffee machines from the past (the kind that are located in hospitals and unknown corridors). Yet, we’re in 2021, and instant coffee has improved vastly. The flavours of the roast and textures from the beans come through, saving you time and offering a new option for those rushed mornings.

With the ease and improvement in taste, instant coffee is making a huge comeback. As you may have seen, major consumer coffee brands have started offering instant coffee to enter this lucrative, soluble coffee market. We’re not saying that specialty soluble coffee will replace the coffee shop experience and a freshly brewed cup. The new techiches and attention instant coffee is receiving gives you, the coffee lover, the option to have a great cup of coffee when you can’t make it to your local barista.

Now there are two major differences between ground and instant coffee, instant coffee is a cup of coffee that's already been brewed and has been processed and preserved in packaging. Therefore it’s taste will not alter with heat or the brewing process, just the additionals (syrups and milks) that you can add. Ground coffee still offers the instant satisfaction is not processed beyond the usual steps of washing and roasting beforehand, ready for you to brew.

If you simply can’t shake the reputation of instant, our quick go-to is the french press. Enabling you to make a decent cup of strong coffee, whilst saving on time. Here’s how:

  1. Start with a very coarse grind, maybe at the coarsest setting on your grinder. A good coffee-to-water ratio is between 60-70 grams of coffee per liter of water, decide how much brewed coffee you want to make and weigh out the right amount of coffee.
  2. Get your clean (filtered if you need it) brew water ready. With French press, you're good to pour your water right off the boil.
  3. Start your clock and add your water. Some people like to add a little water, stir, and add the rest. It really doesn't matter, what we find really important is to give your coffee and water mix a gentle but thorough stir at about 30 to 45 seconds in. You are looking for your coffee to sink, rather than float as you allow it to brew - this gives you time to pack your bag, or send those early morning emails.
  4. Allow your coffee to brew for between 4 and 8 minutes, depending on how you want it to taste (it’s worth experimenting day to day here, and making a note of your preferred). Pour out and enjoy! An instant caffeine hit, in less than 10 minutes.
